Mental Strength for Success

Most of us spent lot of time and money on mental strength but how many of us do actually care about mental strength? If not; then start doing so because mental strength can mean more than physical strength.

"Mental strength or toughness is to physical as 4:1." - Bobby Knight

Mental toughness is having the psychological edge that allows one to perform at peak maximum effort and efficiency during the demands that are placed on them during training, practice, or competition. Specifically, when the demands are greatest or the conditions become adverse.

Whenever the demands are the greatest is when the characteristics of mental toughness are the most evident.

Some of the many characteristics that are evident when a player is mentally tough include:
  • Self-confidence
  • Self-motivation
  • Focus
  • Concentration
  • Composure
  • Calmness
  • Poise
  • Self-control
  • Positive Energy
  • Determination
  • Persistence
  • Leadership

When we are free of depression, anxiety, excessive stress and worry, addictions, and other psychological problems, we are more able to live our lives to the fullest.
Peace of mind is a natural condition, and is available to everyone.
"Failure makes me try harder the next time." –Michael Jordan
Walt Disney's first animation business in the 1920's failed after only one month, forcing him to take a job from another company at that time.
Edmund Hillary failed three times before finally being the first to climb Mt. Everest.
Few things which mentally strong people avoid. They are:
1.     Waste time feeling sorry for themselves.
2.     Waste energy on things they can't control
3.     Fear taking calculated risk.
4.     Dwell on the past.
5.     Make same mistake over and over.
6.     Cherish Other People's Success.
7.     Give up after failure
8.     Expect Instant Result.

  • Expect Instant Result
Mentally strong people do not expect immediate results. They apply their energy and time in measured doses and they celebrate each milestone and increment of success on the way. They improve step by step to reach their goals and taste the success.
  • Give Up after Failure
Every failure is a chance to improve. Even the greatest leaders, entrepreneurs admits that there early efforts invariably tasted failures. Mentally strong people are willing to fail again and again, if necessary, as long as the learning experience from every "failure" can bring them closer to their ultimate goals.
  • Dwell on the past
Most of them live in the fantasies of the "glory days" gone by or keep miring their past disappointments. Especially with young generation students who keep on cribs about their medium of education, schooling, economical status etc.
  • Fear Taking Calculated Risk
A mentally strong person is willing to take calculated risks. This is a different thing than taking a foolish risk. They easily weigh the risks and benefits thoroughly, and will fully assess the potential downsides.
  •  Make Same Mistake Again and Again:
A mentally strong person accepts fully responsibility for past behaviour and is willing to learn from the mistakes. Making same mistake again and again; with a hope for a different and better outcome is foolishness. Ability to self-reflective in an accurate and productive way is one of the greatest strength.

  • Cherish Other People's Success:
It takes strength of character to feel genuine joy and excitement for other people's success. Mentally strong people have this ability. They don't become jealous when other's succeed. Although they may take a close notes on what the individual did well. They are willing to work hard for their own chances at success, without relying on short cuts.

  • Waste Time Feeling Sorry For Themselves:
Mentally strong people don't feel sorry for their circumstances or dwelling on the way they have been mistreated. They learn to take responsibility for their actions and outcomes and they inherit understanding of the fact that frequently life is not fair. They try to learn lessons from the situation and move on to next.

  • Waste Energy on Things They Can't Control:
Mentally strong people do not complain much about other peoples, interviewers, educational background and financial status. They recognize that one thing they can always control is their own response and attitude, and they use these attributes well.

  • Change Is For Good:
Mentally strong people always accept the change and they strongly believe change is for good. They believe change will bring out their best also get a chance to learn more or upgrade their skills. Shy away from change is one of the qualities which is not found in them.

How to become Mentally Strong?

See the Glass Half Full:

If you decide to see things in a positive light, you will see them as such. (Alternatively, if you decide to focus on the negative, you will only see the negative.) We control how we perceive the world. When you choose to focus on the positive, you will begin to see positive changes in both your emotional health and the rest of your life. Being positive will help you to face the things that might upset you, thus allowing your to become stronger emotionally.

Self Confidence:

Confidence is key when becoming emotionally stronger. Being confident in the fact that you are an awesome, beautiful, smart individual will allow you to be more in control of your emotions. When something bad happens, rather than bursting into tears and getting nothing done, remind yourself that you have the ability to overcome this obstacle, whatever it may be. Once you believe you are confident and strong emotionally, you will unconsciously act stronger than before and begin to take control over your emotional whims.

Networking:

Surround yourself with people who make you feel and act like the best person you can be. Having a great support system will help you to become an emotionally stronger person. When you have someone to lean on, you are much less likely to lose control of your emotions. Improve your professional network through Linked-in.

Role Models:

Role models who are strong, confident individuals can help you on your path to becoming emotionally stronger. If the person is someone you know, ask him or her how he/she deals with negative emotions, change, etc.

Be prepared:

Always be prepared. Do not wait until the last minute. Try to get the information about company as much as you can. Many HR managers complaints that job interview candidates know very little about the company they are interviewing for. Google the details about the company you are interviewing with, study the company website, know about the company's goal, products or services, top executives and any latest news about it.

Planning:

Planning is the first and most important step in clearing the interview. Never underestimate the importance of planning. Prepare a list of likely questions and practise them.

Tips while facing interview:

The most successful interview responses focus on the hiring manager’s needs.

“Framing replies that demonstrate you understand their problems, or ‘pain points,’ makes a big difference when competing with many other qualified candidates.”

Prepare by identifying the skills employers are looking for.

Use their in-depth job descriptions and co-relate your previous experience.

Know yourself : If there’s anything negative about you, have a response ready as to why it’s negative but don’t get too defensive. Respond and then move on.

Question yourself as to why are you a good fit for this job. Identify what is unique about you like your accomplishments, handling critical situation in college/work or home. Do remember that interview is nothing but marketing yourself at the best.

Be Positive:

Try to answer all questions positively. Even if you were in a bad situation, think about situation how you can talk positively. This describes your attitude, reflection about your judgement and business acumen.

Never say anything negative about your prior employers or bosses, either–no matter how bad the situation may have been.

It's always better to talk about a glass being half full then to talk about it being half empty.

Get Comfortable:

The most important tip i would like to suggest the interviewee is to get comfortable with interview process. Getting comfortable brings the best out of you.

Feeling comfortable and relaxed positively influences your confidence. “And interviewers always appreciate a relaxed and confident candidate, as opposed to a heavy promoter and edgy one,” she adds.  Practice calming your nerves, and focus on how you can prove you’d be a valuable asset to the company.

Watch out for my next blog on how to answer 7 most commonly asked interview questions.

  1. Tell me about yourself.
  2. What are your strength and weakness.
  3. Where do you want to see yourself after 5 years.
  4. Why are you leaving your current job (for experienced candidates)
  5. Why should I hire you.
  6. What are your salary requirement.
  7. Give me an example where you had a problem at work and how did you approached to resolve it.

6 Successful formulas for Success in Career & Life

In this competitive world everyone wants to taste only success. Is it possible for everyone?. Yes it is possible. Now might be wondering as to how? then read the whole blog and implement them in your life.

·        Rise Early:

Early rise is a common trait found in most of the successful people. According to a research, morning people have been found to be more proactive and more productive. In addition, the health benefits for those with a life before work go on and on. early rising is a common trait found in many CEO s  government officials, and other influential people. Margaret Thatcher was up every day at 5 am ; Frank Lloyd Wright at 4 am and Robert Iger, the CEO of Disney wakes at 4:30 am just to name a few. I know what you’re thinking – you do your best work at night. Not so fast when compared to people who work in the morning.

·        Physical Fitness:

Most of the people who work out daily, workout in the morning. Whether it is a morning yoga session or gym. Exercising before work gives you a boost of energy for the day and that deserved sense of accomplishment. It’ll help wake up your body, and prep you for your day.

·        Plan your day:

Aim for a goal and strive to reach it by stepping closer to it day by day. Neither set the easiest goal or the toughest goal. Go with a moderate goal. The morning is a good time for this as it is often one of the only quiet times a person gets throughout the day. The early hours foster easier reflection that helps when prioritizing your activities. They also allow for uninterrupted problem solving when trying to fit everything into your timetable. While scheduling, don’t forget about your mental health. Plan a 10 minute break after that stressful meeting for a quick walk around the block or a moment of meditation at your desk.

·        Healthy Food:

We all know how an empty stomach feeling is. Take that extra time in the morning to fuel your body for the tasks ahead of it. It will help keep your mind on what’s at hand and not you’re growling stomach. Not only is breakfast good for your physical health, it is also a good time to connect socially. Even five minutes of talking with your family can boost your spirits before heading out the door.

·        Mental Fitness:

These days we talk about physical strength but our mental fitness is overlooked. Both are equally important to have a successful life. The morning is the perfect time to spend some quiet time inside your mind meditating or visualizing. Take a moment to visualize your day ahead of you, focusing on the successes you will have. Even just a minute of visualization and positive thinking can help improve your mood and outlook on your work load for the day.

·        Prioritize your activities:

We all have that one item on “to do” list that we dread. It looms over you all day until you complete it after much procrastination. To avoid such unpleasant feelings put that desirable task first on your list. The morning is the time when your energy level is high. Therefore, you are better equipped to handle more difficult projects. By the time your work day is ending, you’re winding down with easier to dos and heading into your free time more relaxed.

Wish you all the best in your personal & professional life.

Top 10 US Companies among Fortune 500 hiring skilled immigrants for H1B visas.

Most of the United States' elite companies do actively recruit and sponsor talented foreign nationals. Following is a list of 10 of the U.S.'s hottest companies, analyzed and produced from the visa filing records for FY 2012 Q1 and Q2, H1B visa LCA’s

Amazon

Head quartered in Seattle, multinational e-commerce company Amazon is the world's foremost online retailer. To compete with companies like Apple and Samsung, it has recently broken into consumer electronics as well with the introduction of its Kindle Fire tablet in fall 2011.

It's also one of the country's largest H1B visa sponsors, ranking at 26 after having filed for 342 visas.. Seven of these were denied and two withdrawn – resulting in a total of 333 certified visas being filed for Amazon, with annual worker pay for these positions ranging between $49,504 and $160,000.

Job categories filed by Amazon in the financial year include
  • ·          Software Developers for Applications and Systems Software,
  • ·          Financial Analysts,

  • ·          Computer and Information Systems Managers,

Apple

Although Apple saw the very saddening passing of founder Steve Jobs last fall, the company has continued to dominate both mobile and computing marketplaces. In addition to scoring a victory in a landmark patent-infringement lawsuit against competitor Samsung, Apple also recently announced the release of its new iPhone 5.

The Cupertino-based company weighs in at 20 in the nation for H1B sponsorship, filing for 523 visas in 38 occupation categories. Only three of those visas were denied and none were withdrawn, with 520 H1B visas subsequently having been certified for positions paying in the range of $55,411 to $260,000.

Among The general job categories for which Apple filed are
  • ·          Computer Software Engineers for Applications and Systems Software,

With a total of 203 LCAs, BoA ranks 55th in the nation in terms of H1B visas filed so far this financial year. Four were denied and three were withdrawn, leaving 196 certified visas for workers in 18 occupation categories paying in a range of $48,693 to $230,000 a year.

Facebook

With a turbulent IPO and less-than-stellar earnings, social networking giant Facebook has seen some definite ups and downs this year.

In spite of this, the company is still among the top 100 companies filing for H1B visas; ranking number 62 with 178 visas filed for full-time employment. Of these, only two were denied and three withdrawn, so the company has seen 173 H1B employees with a salary range of between $69,190 and $200,000 a year.

Although Houston-based Halliburton Energy Services doesn't rank particularly high on the overall list of H1B-sponsoring companies, it is one of the highest-ranking companies in the U.S. oil industry. An oilfield services company that operates around the world, Halliburton also seems to be consistently mentioned in U.S. headlines due to its many government contracts, and because of its long-standing relationship with former Vice President Dick Cheney and former President George W. Bush.

In the first half of FY2012, Halliburton filed for 49 visas, with one denied and one withdrawn. Overall, then, the company successfully filed for 47 visas in 18 job categories, including

Harvard ranks behind Michigan State and Northwestern, respectively, at number 130 with 107 visas filed. Only two of those visas were denied and none withdrawn, so the university has hired for 105 positions in 27 occupation categories with annual pay rates between $37,253 and $239,292.

  • ·          Computer and Information Systems Managers, among others.

Microsoft

Lately, it seems like Microsoft has been eclipsed in the news by other tech companies like Google and Apple. However, the company remains a giant in almost every field of computing, and it has attempted a major coup in mobile markets with the recent introduction of the Windows Phone (complete with its own OS) by HTC.

Every year, Microsoft ranks as one of the U.S.'s foremost employers of foreign nationals; though it has fallen a spot to No. 3 with 2150 H1B visas filed, don't be surprised if it climbs to the No. 1 or 2 spot before the financial year is finished. Of the visas Microsoft has filed, three have been denied and 22 withdrawn, meaning the company has successfully filed 2125 visas for 22 occupational categories paying in a range of $59,000 to $235,000 a year.

The jobs for which it has sponsored visas include
  • ·          Software Developers for Applications,
  • ·          Managers (general),

  • ·          Multimedia Artists and
  • ·          Animators and more.

Verizon

One of the top telecommunications companies on the planet, Verizon boasts more than 100 million connections and generated $110.9 billion in annual revenue for 2011.

Verizon filed for 139 H1B visas, making it the No. 93 employer of foreign nationals in the country. The company had four of those visas denied and one withdrawn, allowing it to hire 134 workers for yearly salaries of between $65,000 and $125,000.

Verizon sponsored visas for
  • ·          Computer Systems Analysts,
  • ·          Software Developers, and
  • ·          Computer Systems Administrators, among others.

These stats reflect LCAs filed for its offices in Irving, Texas.

Companies like Ford, General Motors and Wells Fargo, just for example, all filed less than 20 H1B visas a piece during the first half of FY2012. And the National Football League (NFL) has filed for a grand total of one H1B visa during the same period. So clearly, not every U.S. Company featured in the headlines has a particularly stellar track record for visa sponsorship.

All the best!
